Monroe County

Monroe County was named in honor of U.S. president James Monroe. Located in the Poconos Mountains area of northeastern Pennsylvania, it is approximately 75 miles West of New York and 90 miles North of Philadelphia. Two of the county’s boundaries are delineated by rivers: the Delaware and the Lehigh. Blessed with natural beauty and studded with hotels and resorts, the county claims the nickname of “Honeymoon Capital of the World.”

Monroe County was established on April 1, 1836; more than a year later, Stroudsburg became its county seat. In 1856, the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western railroad began to operate between Scranton and New York, bringing increasing opportunities for the county’s residents. While the county initially relied on its lumber industry and agriculture, with time it has come to depend primarily on the tourist industry.

The East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania is located in Monroe County, as are three state parks: Big Pocono, Gouldsboro, and Tobyhanna. Other attractions in the county include part of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, the International Poconos Raceway, as well as several ski areas and water parks.
