Pennsylvania Sees Another Norfolk Southern Train Crash

TrainDerail3

With communities still reeling from the infamous East Palestine crash, trains continue to derail on a frequent basis. It seems as though Norfolk Southern is struggling with deep-rooted, systemic safety issues that are not being resolved. The lack of action has been made clear by continuous crashes in Pennsylvania – including a recent three-car derailment near Allentown. If you have been injured or poisoned by a train crash in Pennsylvania, you may be eligible for compensation. Speak to an injury lawyer to learn more.

Conflicting Reports After Norfolk Southern Train Collision in Pennsylvania

On March 2nd of 2024, it was reported that Norfolk Southern trains had crashed in Pennsylvania. The National Transportation Safety Board immediately announced that it was investigating the incident, which occurred near the towns of Easton and Allentown. At least one of the trains seems to have ended up in the Lehigh River.

According to the investigation, a train initially struck a second train that had stopped on the track. The wreckage from this collision flew onto a separate track, causing a third train to derail. NBC ran a headline assuring readers that there were “no hazardous materials reported,” and they spoke of various substances falling into the river in the same article.

Diesel fuel leaked, and a number of polypropylene plastic pellets apparently fell into the river. In addition, the hazmat team apparently arrived on the scene quickly, and it is not clear why their presence was necessary if there were no hazardous materials present.

Communities Remain on Edge After Norfolk Southern Crash in East Palestine

Of course, rural communities in Pennsylvania are on edge after the incident in East Palestine. This train crash saw toxins leak into the atmosphere and soil, threatening the safety of countless residents.

According to AmericanRivers.org, the Lehigh River is a “direct drinking source” that provides water to thousands of people. It is also a tributary to the Delaware River, which provides 15 million people with drinking water. It is not clear why Norfolk Southern trains are operating so close to this drinking source. It may be that this particular crash did not cause excessive contamination. But what about the next trains that pass by the river?

Considering the frequency of train crashes in the modern era, it may be only a matter of time before another set of trains falls into the Lehigh River – potentially poisoning numerous people with hazardous substances.
