Pennsylvania Family Sues After Opioid Death

Drugs9

While the pandemic seems to be fading, the opioid crisis shows no signs of slowing down. It has been robbing families of their loved ones for many years now, and it is beginning to feel like just another reality of American life. Recently, a family filed a lawsuit against two doctors and a medical company for a woman’s opioid death. Lawsuits like these give us some hope, showing us that victims are capable of fighting back and sparking real change in our healthcare system.

Two Doctors and Rite Aid Sued in Pennsylvania for Opioid Death

On November 17th of 2022, it was reported that a family in Towamencin Township was suing Rite Aid and two doctors for their alleged role in a woman’s opioid death. This individual passed away due to the toxic nature of her drug prescriptions, which included several opioids. The husband of the deceased victim claims that two doctors, a pain management practice, and a pharmacy retailer called Rite Aid should be held accountable.

The lawsuit points out that the defendants – especially the doctors – allowed the woman to gain access to “highly addictive, dangerous and lethal opioids, and other controlled substances.” She first became a patient at the pain management practice in 2009, receiving care that the lawsuit claims was “reckless and negligent prescribing of dangerous and lethal dosages and combinations of opioids and other controlled substances.” This treatment continued for over a decade, concluding with a lethal combination fentanyl, hydrocodone, benzodiazepines, and central nervous system depressants in 2020.

Data shows that this woman was prescribed approximately 13,920 hydrocodone pills and 2,115 fentanyl patches. This treatment was never meant to end, as the woman was suffering from permanent chronic pain syndrome. You have to wonder why the doctors believed that these powerful drugs represented a long-term solution that could be administered over the course of a decade.

Even worse, the family’s attorney claimed that the drugs never actually helped, and only served to fuel an addiction that funneled the family’s cash into the hands of the big pharmaceutical industry:

“It never reduced her pain. It never gave her more function. It’s what I see in just almost every one of my cases. It’s a vicious cycle. The doctors lead somebody down this road and there’s just no turning back.”
