Radiologist In Pennsylvania Faces Legal Action For Unnecessary Procedures

Catheter_Coronary

Medicine can be an extremely lucrative industry. In fact, the potential profits can be so high that many doctors disregard the actual well-being of their patients and simply try to rake in as much cash as possible. This is why doctors are required to swear Hippocratic oaths to “do no harm” and only act in the best interests of their patients. Unfortunately, some doctors break these oaths and recommend not the best treatments for their patients, but the most profitable treatments. Fortunately, some of these doctors are brought to justice. But what can you do if you were recommended unnecessary and harmful treatments by your doctor?

Pennsylvania Doctor Accused of Carrying Out Needless, Invasive Procedures

On May 4th of 2023, it was reported that a Pennsylvania doctor was sued for carrying out needless, invasive procedures. These included peripheral artery procedures in his patients’ legs. He and his associates were apparently reimbursed at least $6.5 million after carrying out 500 of these procedures within the space of about three years. This particular radiologist has a history of negligence, having been sanctioned in 2015 for performing unnecessary, experimental vascular procedures. These included angioplasties and stenting on hundreds of patients who apparently had Multiple Sclerosis. This is despite the fact that MS is considered a “non-vascular” disease.

These procedures are incredibly invasive and uncomfortable for patients. They involve puncturing the skin and inserting medical devices into the arteries of patients. Not only were these procedures unnecessary, but they increased the likelihood of future complications – including leg amputations.

Unnecessary Procedures Are All too Common

The truth is that this is hardly an isolated incident in the United States. In fact, there are probably many other doctors engaging in similar activities who never get caught. For example, on April 24th it was reported that a physician in Washington had been ordered to pay over $1 million after performing numerous neurosurgery procedures. On May 4th, it was reported that a Wisconsin doctor had performed unnecessary robotic surgeries that cost twice as much as normal surgeries. Not only were these surgeries unnecessary, but they also caused higher rates of pelvic infections.

If you believe that you were harmed due to an unnecessary medical procedure, you have every right to explore your legal options and sue. Doing so can provide you with compensation for medical expenses, missed wages, emotional distress, and any other damages you might have been forced to endure.
