Scranton

Located in Northeastern Pennsylvania, in the Lackawanna River valley, Scranton is the county seat of Lackawanna County. A home built by a settler in 1778 still stands in Scranton today. The city was incorporated in 1866, when it also began running the first electric street car system in the U.S., which earned it the nickname “The Electric City.” Scranton grew around forges and furnaces, coal mines and railroads. Its heritage is preserved today in the Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum, the Electric City Trolley Museum, the railroad museum at the Steamtown National Historic Site, and historic buildings restored throughout the city. Scranton now has approximately 75,000 residents who enjoy its attractions, including the nearby ski resort of Sno Mountain, which boasts some of the steepest skiing slopes in the state.
